All of us start inside the womb and we float in thick water called amniotic fluid. The only way that we are able to breathe in the womb is through the placenta. When we get out of the womb, the body’s natural adaptive mechanism begins to take over as we start to breath nasally. Breathing through the nose will persist until we die and as we grow older, we also learn how to breathe through the mouth as well. Nasal breathing is the most comfortable way for us to breath but unfortunately, the nose may be prone to a lot of irritation in the environment. If ever the nose is irritated for some reason, it will give way to the most annoying condition known to man and that is nasal congestion. We may begin searching out home remedies for nasal congestion then.

Irritation is the number one cause of nasal congestion and not mucous accumulation. A lot of people think that when your nose produces mucous, it will block your nasal passages causing difficulty in breathing. This is certainly not true since the inflammation of your mucous membranes is the reason why you have congestion. No matter how much you blow your nose and get rid of all the mucous you have, you will still experience nasal congestion because of the unrelieved inflammation.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, all human beings start to breathe through the nose. This is very important to note because if your baby has nasal congestion, it is best to bring the child to the hospital because they are known to be obligate nose breathers. If you neglect to intervene, your child will undergo respiratory distress which may progress to failure and eventually, death.

Treating nasal congestion in adults may be very easy and all you have to do is breathe through your mouth. You may also take some medications to achieve instant relief but you will have to visit your doctor first.
